WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS : THE ENGLISH BACKGROUND
Yeats started his literary career in the last but one decade of the 19th century. The last decade of the last century ushered in an era of social change. The agrarian economy was yielding the palm to the industrial sector. This industrialization brought in its wake urbanisation. The town brought many problems. The cities were becoming more and more noisy; congested and smoky. Urbanization led to a significant increase in crime and vice and fall in moral values. The poetry of the period reflects all this. However, industrialisation, which came in the wake of scientific discoveries, brought about an enquiring spirit. As R. A. Scott James says, "the 20th century has for its characteristic to put everything, in every sphere of life, to the question, and secondly, in the light of this scepticism, to reform, to reconstruct to accept the new age as new, and attempt to mould it by conscious, purposeful effort."
