WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS : The Irish background

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS : The Irish Background
All through his life Yeats had been shuttling between Dublin and London with the result that he imbibed both the traditions. If he was influenced by poets like Spencer, Shelley and the Pre-Rephaelities he was also a poet of the Irish tradition. In terms of religion, tradition, way of thought and economy Ireland is different from England. Moreover Irish landscape is haunted by shadows, spirits and memories and this would provided Yeats with a new imagery, a new mythology and new legends. Besides being essentially an agricultural country Ireland of the times of Yeats was a Catholic country, although Yeats himself came from Protestant stock. This accounts for the aloofness which Yeats felt in his environment.
During the times of Yeats Ireland was ruled by England and this rule was far from benevolent. Irish were struggling for their independence. Rebellions activities were the order of the day, Yeats was also influenced by these patriotic activities of the Irish. Yeats is remembered as the national poet of Ireland because besides expressing the very spirit of Ireland he also wrote about the Irish patriotic feelings.
