WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS : SCHOOL LIFE

WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS : School  Life
In 1875 Yeats went to a school in Hammersmith. But he was unhappy at school. His Irish nationality came between him and the English boys and girls who teased him. So he could not learn much at Hammersmith. In 1880 Yeats got an opportunity to return to Ireland. He now attended a school in Dublin. At school he created a sensation by criticising Christianity and declaring himself a follower of Darwin and Huxley. Although schooling did not do much good to him, but his reading during this period was enormous and varied. He read Balzac, Shakespeare, Shelley, Keats, Byron and the Pre-Raphael poets. During this period he was infatuated by his red-haired cousin, Laura Johnson, who was already engaged to another. It was during this period that he visited the island of Innisfree. He immortalised this visit in his exquisite lyric "The Lake Isle of Innisfree." It was again during this period that Yeats became interested in the cause of Irish nationalism and wrote many poems that express his love for Ireland.
